How Much does Marriage Therapy Cost?
Most marriage therapists charge between $150-$250 per hour in the Sacramento area. Some accept payment via insurance, but those who specialize in marriage therapy usually do not, because the reimbursement rates are too low. Many of my clients pay for therapy with Health Savings Accounts, and some receive out-of-network reimbursement from their health insurance. I have succcessfully used a company called Thrizer to help me get reimbursed for my out-of-network therapy expenses.
The total cost is what matters most. Most therapists do not really specialize in couples work, and just apply the principles of individual therapy when they work with couples. Most relationship therapy is ineffective, and sometimes even harmful.
It’s time to get a new therapist if you’ve attended more than five sessions without seeing significant improvement in your relationship. Most therapists do not have the skills, experience, or training to help couples resolve the deeply-intertwined dynamics that drive relationship problems.
Marriage therapy is cheaper than divorce, but only if it works. Marriage therapy that doesn’t work is just a waste of time. You need a therapist who is willing and able to directly address the deception, and manipulation that is going on in your relationship right now. You need a therapist who will help you make immediate, positive changes in your marriage.
